My chosen subjects of water and sky give me the opportunity to turn my stubbornly introverted gaze outward. Painting them allows me to study these forces of nature more closely. Water has its own reality, both in physicality — gravity and movement, and in perception — the light inside the water, and the surface reflections of its surrounds. Skies can give us gorgeous views, and are an examination of abstraction and vastness of space. Forging a connection with these elements could make us feel tiny, but I actually think the opposite is true. They make us feel big, and I like feeling connected to that bigness.
