Kristen Stamper

Welcome! I wish I could meet you in person to invite you in and show you my studio. But as that is not possible this year, please join me on this virtual tour:

Southern Indiana’s woodlands and wild places inspire me. This group of recent paintings were created either outside on location or in my studio from sketches and memories following a captivating outdoor moment.

“I am drawn to the color and light that is revealed in moments of stillness, when we truly slow down. Making use of the subtle and dramatic hues I observe while painting in nature, I seek to discover interesting and unique color harmonies that express the spirit of that place.”

The paintings here are in watercolor, or oil on panel and canvas. Sometimes I work with oil on watercolor paper, which gives a lovely soft quality. Additional paintings shown in the studio tour video above are available. And more choices are on my website. Contact Kristen to purchase or with questions. I welcome your interest.

More about Kristen

Passion for color and light plays through the paintings of Kristen Stamper. The natural world—observed during hikes, outdoor painting sessions, and gardening triumphs in Southern Indiana—keeps this artist fascinated. Painting outside directly from life offers a lot of challenges. Changing light, bugs and weather are just a few. However, for Kristen the joy of working directly from nature is truly compelling. Observations like burbling water and bird song, nuances of color and reflected light, the scent of damp earth or dry leaves, and more contribute to the spirit of a particular place on a particular day. Which colors might evoke a particular set of sensations? Studying colors and their relationships along with our emotional response to various hues, adds to Kristen’s ideas about what is behind a color in sunlight or shadow.

Kristen holds a B.S. in Fine Arts and a Masters in Education. She is a regular participant in local and regional shows. Her creative career also includes teaching, course development, writing, design, and photography. Kristen founded the Bloomington-based outdoor painting group Upland Plein Air in 2015, to offer weekly creative outings to destinations around South Central Indiana. She invites artists of all skill levels to come on an outing and see what Upland has to offer. For more information, visit http://UplandPleinAir.org
